| Name | Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) : Joint Front Range Climate Change Vulnerability Study (JFRCCVS) |
| Project Purpose | There is increasing concern among metropolitan water providers in Colorado’s Front Range regarding the possible impacts of on their future water supply. A group of Front Range water agencies are working together on a study intended to provide the education, tools, and methodology necessary to examine the effects of climate change scenarios on several common watersheds. This regional unified approach is intended to give Colorado water providers the opportunity to work from the same historic and projected hydrometeorological data, historic natural streamflow, and methodology.
The central objective of this project is to assess potential changes in the timing and volume of hydrologic runoff for the years 2040 and 2070 as compared with 1950-1999. Two hydrologic models will be calibrated and implemented in the study for this purpose. The temperature and precipitation projections used to generate corresponding streamflow come from regionally downscaled temperature and precipitation global climate model output. The projected streamflow obtained by running adjusted sequences of temperature and precipitation through the hydrologic models will be compared to historic streamflow to estimate the sensitivity of water supplies to climate change.
